What is a Hot Stone massage? Who can benefit?

Have you ever experienced a Hot Stone Massage?

With these beautiful crisp mornings and chilly evenings we’ve been having, a hot stone massage might be the perfect addition to your next massage.

I’d like to FIRST mention that I NEVER charge extra for any additions to your massage. I can’t stand upselling my amazing clients. I’ve tried it in the past and it just does not work for me. All add-ons are ALWAYS complimentary!

So what is a Hot Stone Massage?

Hot Stones are basalt stones that I place in my towel warmer. This particular type of rock retains its temperature, so when I pull them out and lather them up with massage cream, they radiate warmth into your muscle tissue.

Hot Stones have proven to be detoxifying, improve circulation, and soothe the nervous system. When you add heat to a muscle, the blood vessels dilate, toxins are drawn out of the blood cells, and the blood circulates more easily and freely in that area. Warmth also cues the nervous system to relax, inducing deep breathing and a calm, present state of mind.

We can use Hot Stones in two ways:

We can make the hot stones the primary focus for the massage. In this type of treatment, I bring the hot stones in right at the beginning of the massage, using them to warm up your muscles. I would start off resting a hot stone at the base of the spine, and slowly work my way up to the mid back. In this type of massage, we’d use hot stones on every body part that we treat.

The alternative is to use them intermittently, briefly or as needed. In this case, we would use a different primary technique, like traditional Swedish or Deep Tissue, and bring the hot stones in as a warm-welcomed added touch. We can use the heat to warm up your back at the beginning, or for some added relaxation after some deeper work at the end.

Both ways provide immense benefits!

Who can benefit from a Hot Stone Massage?

Hot Stones are great for just about anyone. If you have very tight muscles but don’t want super firm pressure, or you’re just feeling more sensitive that day, hot stones are a great way to open the muscle tissue up without causing any pain, even the “good” kind!

There are only a few cases in which I would not recommend someone use hot stones in their massage. For example, pregnancy, unmanaged high blood pressure, skin sensitivity, skin numbness (because you can’t tell me if it’s too hot!), or around any metal implants or devices (because they can get too hot!).
